In case Petrus thwarts your holiday plans one day, we have a list of suggestions for you, which make even – or particularly – a rainy day to a real adventure.

When the Counts of Montfort (16th century) could rent the royal mines, they opened ore mines in the Hinterstein valley, of which the produce was smelted in the iron foundry at the Ostrachknie.
In addition to agriculture, mining brought in an important income for the population of the Ostrach valley.
Oberstdorf and Hindelang were in the 15th and 16th century actually one of the most important areas of the upper German armaments industry.
Later, when the weapons were no longer needed, the hammer and nail forges started to produce new products.
Nowadays they still produce shovels, pans etc, which are very popular because of their high quality.
Visits are possible by appointment.

How farmers lived in the early times, can be experience in the heritage museum in Bad Hindelang (a 500 years old listed mill).
Here you will find: a tradition room, an exhibition of minerals and fossils, a room made out of pine tree wood, a shoemaker workshop as well as a flax spinning room.
And a nostalgic retrospect on the beginning of the winter sports and the hardships of the doing the laundry in the olds days as well as hunting and poaching.

Follow the mythical history on secured steps 300 m deep in the fascinated world of
prehistoric times – the only split cave in the Allgäu can be visited safely with sturdy
shoes and with a constant temperature of 4°C – and of course it won’t rain in there!

Young and old can, like the ski jumpers, reach the tower of the ski jump with the elevator and enjoy the splendid view.
From the entrance a short walk along the outrun to the inclined lift.
This lift brings you 85 m higher to the take-off.
From there you can take the lift for the last part of the jump tower to the panorama platform with a wonderful view.
Each year the opening leg of the four hills tournament takes place here and on the high ski jumps every winning jump of the Nordic Ski-WM 2005 was made here.
International ski jump athletes and the offspring are training in the Erdinger Areas in summer and winter.

The Breitachklamm (chasm) near Oberstdorf, ca. 25 km, an in central Europe unique natural monument, that attracts over 30.000 visitors each year.
She is one of the most beautiful rock chasms in the Alps.
A good alternative on a rainy day, because the more water rushes through the gorge, the more impressive it is.
